FAQ
Questions, answered.
Everything we get asked about windows, doors, glass and glazing in Cape Town. If yours is not here, send it over and we will answer it.
Choosing your windows and doors
It depends on your priorities. Aluminium suits most modern and coastal homes: low-maintenance, rust-resistant and slim-framed. Steel offers unmatched strength, security and a slim industrial look, ideal for large spans and heritage matching. Timber brings natural warmth and is the right choice for period properties. We assess your home and recommend the best fit.
For most coastal homes, yes. Aluminium naturally resists corrosion and won't rust in salt-laden air, so it needs far less upkeep near the sea. Steel is stronger but requires protective coatings and regular maintenance to prevent rust at the coast. We powder-coat and specify both materials to handle Cape Town's marine environment.
Quality powder-coated aluminium typically lasts 30 to 50+ years with minimal maintenance. Well-maintained steel lasts decades but needs periodic rust treatment, especially at the coast. Timber can last generations when properly sealed and maintained. Lifespan on all three depends heavily on installation quality and ongoing upkeep.
No, aluminium doesn't rust. It forms a natural protective oxide layer and, when powder-coated, resists corrosion even in salty coastal air. That's why aluminium is a popular choice for seaside homes in the Western Cape. Steel, by contrast, will rust over time without protective coatings and regular maintenance.
Steel offers the highest inherent strength and resistance to forced entry, making it excellent for security-focused applications. Aluminium can be specified with multi-point locking, anti-lift features and reinforced profiles for strong security too. We can also fit security shutters over any window or door for an added layer of protection.
Standard aluminium conducts heat, but thermally broken aluminium profiles, with an insulating barrier inside the frame, significantly reduce heat transfer. Paired with the right glazing, they keep interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter. We can advise on thermal-break and glazing options to suit your home.
Double glazing uses two panes with an insulating gap to improve thermal and acoustic performance, useful for noise, heat and condensation. Whether it's the right specification depends on your frames, aspect and goals. Share your project details with us and we'll advise on the best glazing option.
Casement windows are hinged and swing open, giving maximum ventilation and an unobstructed view. Sliding windows glide horizontally on a track, take up no space when open and suit wider openings. The best choice depends on your space, airflow needs and style, and we'll advise per opening.
Sliding doors glide on a track and are sleek and easy to operate for everyday use, though one panel always overlaps another. Folding (stacking) doors concertina fully to one side, opening the entire span for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining. Both come in aluminium, and we'll match the right one to your opening.
Yes. Slim-profile aluminium can replicate the classic steel 'Crittall' industrial look, fine black sightlines and gridded panes, while avoiding steel's rust and maintenance at the coast. It's a popular way to get heritage-style aesthetics with modern, low-upkeep performance. We can show you slim aluminium options that achieve this look.
A thermal break is an insulating barrier built into an aluminium frame that separates the inside and outside metal, stopping heat and cold transferring through. It makes aluminium windows far more energy efficient and reduces condensation. Standard aluminium has no thermal break, so ask us about thermally broken profiles for better insulation.
Coastal and Cape Town conditions
Yes. Our aluminium products are engineered to handle the wind loadings of coastal areas, well-suited to Cape Town's notorious south-easter. Correct profile selection, reinforcing and installation ensure large sliding and folding doors perform reliably in high winds.
Choose corrosion-resistant materials and finishes, with powder-coated aluminium ideal for seaside homes. Rinse frames periodically with fresh water to clear salt build-up, keep drainage and weep holes clear, and service moving parts. For steel near the coast, protective coatings and regular maintenance are essential. We can advise per your location.
For beachfront and sea-facing homes, powder-coated aluminium is the go-to, since it resists salt corrosion and holds its finish in harsh marine air. Marine-grade powder coating and appropriate hardware add further protection. We specify finishes and fixings suited to how exposed your property is to salt spray.
Coastal windows and doors benefit from a fresh-water rinse every few weeks to clear salt build-up, plus a check of tracks, seals and weep holes. Moving parts on sliding and folding doors should be cleaned and lubricated a few times a year. We can advise a maintenance routine based on your distance from the sea.
Restoration, repairs and servicing
Usually, yes. Steel windows often look worse than they are: surface rust and old paint can be stripped, the steel treated and refinished, and hardware serviced or replaced. Restoration preserves the original slim sightlines and character that modern replacements struggle to match. We service, refurbish and re-glaze steel windows.
Both. We handle everything from replacing one cracked pane in a home to manufacturing and installing windows and doors for entire buildings. No job is too small: a broken pane, a stuck steel window or a full shopfront all get the same attention.
Yes. Heritage restoration is one of our specialities. We repair and restore original timber windows and doors, using traditional techniques including putty glazing, to preserve the character of period properties, and we manufacture new timber joinery to match where restoration isn't possible.
Putty glazing is the traditional method of bedding glass into a frame using linseed-based putty, common in older steel and timber windows. It's essential for authentic heritage restoration. We still carry out all types of glazing, including putty glazing, to keep period windows looking and functioning correctly.
Yes. Stiff or seized steel windows are usually caused by paint build-up, rust or worn hardware rather than a need for replacement. We service and refurbish steel windows, easing and adjusting, treating rust, replacing hinges and stays, and re-glazing, to get them opening smoothly again.
Yes. Converting old steel windows to aluminium is a common upgrade: you get slim modern frames, easier operation and no rust, with far less maintenance at the coast. We measure your existing openings and manufacture aluminium replacements to fit. If you'd rather keep the originals, we also restore steel windows.
Yes. When you're only replacing or adding some windows, we work to match the style, profile and finish of your existing ones so the result looks consistent, which matters especially on heritage and character homes. Share photos and measurements and we'll advise on the closest match.
Often, yes. If the frame is sound, we can replace a broken or fogged pane without replacing the whole window, including re-glazing steel and timber frames and putty glazing where needed. If the frame itself is corroded or damaged, we'll tell you honestly whether reglazing or replacement makes more sense.
Frameless showers and glass
Frameless showers use toughened safety glass, which is up to five times stronger than ordinary glass and, if it ever breaks, shatters into small blunt granules rather than sharp shards. In South Africa this is required by SANS 10400-N for shower enclosures. We supply and install compliant frameless showers.
Frameless shower enclosures typically use toughened glass around 8 to 10mm thick, with the exact thickness and maximum panel size governed by SANS 10400-N. Thicker glass gives a more solid, premium feel and less flex. We specify the correct thickness for your enclosure's size and layout.
Yes, in defined situations. SANS 10400-N requires safety glazing, toughened or laminated glass, in higher-risk areas such as shower enclosures, doors, low-level glazing, balustrades and shopfronts. We glaze to these standards so your installation is compliant and safe.
Yes. Alongside frameless showers we work with glass for balustrades, splashbacks and general glazing. Balustrade and shower glass must be toughened safety glass to meet South African building regulations, and we specify and install to comply.
Toughened glass is heat-treated to be much stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small blunt granules, and it's used for frameless showers and doors. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer that holds it together when broken and adds security and sound insulation. Both are safety glass, and the right one depends on the application.
Squeegee the glass after each shower to prevent water spots and mineral build-up, and clean weekly with a mild solution, avoiding abrasive cleaners on the glass and hardware. Keeping hinges dry and clean helps them last. A protective glass coating makes ongoing cleaning easier, so ask us about it when we quote.
It's very rare. Toughened glass can, in isolated cases, break seemingly on its own due to tiny impurities or edge damage from earlier knocks, a known industry phenomenon. Quality glass, correct installation and undamaged edges minimise the risk. If it does break, it shatters safely into blunt granules rather than sharp shards.
Security, tinting and extras
Yes. We supply and install security shutters that add a strong physical barrier over windows and doors while still allowing light and ventilation. They're a practical security upgrade for both homes and businesses, and can be fitted to existing openings.
Yes. We offer window tinting to reduce heat, glare and UV, add privacy, and help protect furnishings from fading. Tinting is available for residential and commercial windows, and we can advise on the right film for your aspect and glare problem.
Yes, blinds are among the services we offer alongside our windows, doors and glazing work. It's convenient when you want a single supplier to handle both the opening and the window covering together.
Both add security but work differently. Burglar bars are a fixed, permanent barrier, effective and low-cost but always visible. Security shutters retract when not needed, so you keep your view and light, and close them for protection and privacy. Many homeowners use shutters for living areas and bars for less-visible windows.

Yes. We design and manufacture custom steel and aluminium windows and doors to suit your openings, including folding and sliding doors, custom windows, shopfronts, hinged doors and internal glazed office partitions. Bespoke sizing is standard for us.
Yes. Our steel and aluminium products can be powder-coated to virtually any colour to match your home, brand or existing frames. Powder-coating also adds a durable, low-maintenance protective finish that holds its colour well in the Cape sun and coastal air.
It depends on scope. A repair or single pane can often be handled quickly, while custom-manufactured windows, doors or full installations take longer to fabricate and fit. Once we've assessed your project we'll give you a realistic timeline along with your quote.
For manufactured windows, doors and installations, a deposit is typically required to confirm and schedule your order, with the balance due on completion. The exact terms are set out in your quote. We'll be clear upfront about what's payable and when before any work begins.
Yes. We stand behind our workmanship, and manufactured products and hardware carry the relevant manufacturer warranties. The specifics depend on the product and scope of your project, and we'll confirm what's covered in your quote so you know exactly where you stand.
Yes. Where we're replacing windows or doors, we can remove the old units as part of the job and leave the site tidy. Let us know at quote stage so we can include removal and disposal in the scope of work.
We work to keep disruption and mess to a minimum. Replacing windows does involve some building work around the opening, but experienced installers limit damage and tidy up afterwards. Any making-good of plaster or paint around new frames is discussed upfront so there are no surprises.
Glazing doesn't require a statutory Certificate of Compliance the way electrical or plumbing work does. What matters is that it meets SANS 10400-N and uses correctly marked safety glass. We install to those standards and can confirm the glass specification used, so talk to us about what your build or property sale requires.
To quote accurately we need your opening sizes (or rough measurements), the material and style you're after, photos of the existing windows or space, your suburb, and whether it's a repair, replacement or new installation. The more detail you share, the tighter the quote, and we can always do a site visit to confirm.
